S. Lakmal (Man of the Match): “Last few years have been very good. Credit to the coaching staff who have done a lot of hard work with me. My fitness, my hard work, my health, everything has come together.”
T.Perera (Sri Lanka captain): “First of all we have to give Two Hundred Percent credit to our bowlers. They were disciplined, and bowled the right length and the right areas. This is an unplayable wicket. We didn’t expect that.
We expected Two hundred Fifty-Two hundrd Sixty, but after that Lakmal and Methews bowled very well. At the moment, [Lakmal] is our first fast bowler. He’s done very well in the Test series as well.”
Rohit Sharma (India captain): “Two games to go, but having said that, we were not up to the mark today with the bat. Not enough runs on the board. The bowlers came out and did what they could. If we had Seventy – Eighty more runs, it could have been different, but we lost the match with the bat today.
We want to thrive in these type of conditions and come out good. We won’t always get to play on flat pitches.
Today was not the ideal day for all our batters. It was an eye-opener. Hopefully we can regroup and come back in the next two matches.”
Sri Lanka will like to forget their Test blunders in a hurry. In the just-concluded three-match Test series that India won 1-0, Sri Lanka showed glimpses of good form, but batting glitches hit the team hard at crucial times. Lanka will back themselves against India and will expect two former skippers Angelo Mathews and Upul Tharanga
play their roles perfectly. Thisara Perera can be a match-winner on his day.Sri Lanka Beat India is the Biggest Achivement of Srilankan Youngster.
This will be just the fourth One-Day International played at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, with India picking up two wins from the last three. India have plenty of depth in both batting and bowling. In this three-match ODI series followed by the T20s, it remains to be seen how many rookie players get an opportunity.
India’s preparation for the 2019 ICC World Cup in London starts in Dharamsala.
Rohit admitted it was a new experience. “For us, we were trying to survive in those conditions because we knew that if the initial overs get over, the wicket will get better. But we lost wickets and were also not scoring at a good pace. It’s an eye opener, we will learn from it. It’s a young batting group, the guys, including myself, will learn and play well in these situations next time.”
Defending the low score, Indian bowlers gave the hosts a good start by picking two early wickets. However, a no-ball from Virat Kohli saw Upul Tharanga get a life after he was caught by Dinesh Karthik. Rohit didn’t see it as a big incident.
Sri Lanka Beat India Don’t blame Indian bowlers
“We lost the game with the bat and not with the ball. It will be unfair to single out one individual, especially a bowler. We as a batting group failed to tackle the situation.
I wouldn’t say it cost us dearly, because there was not enough total on the board, if we would have scored 180-190 maybe we could have said so. But if you are defending 110,you can hardly do anything except get 3-4 wickets with the new ball and try to come back into the game,” Rohit said.
This is not the first time India have struggled in pace-friendly conditions against Sri Lanka. In overcast conditions in the first Test in Kolkata, India struggled. Rohit felt it will have no bearing on the South African tour starting early in January.
“This is a one-day side, I don’t think there is any comparison. With the Test team, we struggled in Kolkata. Any team in those conditions will struggle. I have seen enough cricket and we recently saw Ashes as well,
what was happening there,” he said.
“In conditions like those, one or two batsmen will score, not all.”
